Listen as you go!
The Strokes – Threat of Joy The Strokes are back! The Strokes are back! Well, for anEP at least. My Strokes are back. Finally the Strokes sound like they’ve put those 2006 shoes back on with “Threat of Joy”. With this new EP, The Strokes have managed to erase their past two albums in a single song and it feels like I’m back in high school. This song is classic Strokes and I believe it’s the song we’ve all be waiting for from them sinceFirst Impressions of Earth. The Strokes are back and I couldn’t be any happier to see my favorite band finally come together and make the music we've all been craving for. Thee Oh Sees – The Dream This intense 6 minute jam doesn’t slow down even for a second. It’s electric and it’s what got me home from work on a positive note. It’s the perfect song to cruise down the highway late at night with. The guitar riffs guide the calculated drum beat and Thee Oh Sees manage to make it still sound like a great jam rock tune. It starts off with a great kick and it doesn’t ever come down. Monarchy – Dance Like Hell I was doing my own bit of musical discovery and I stumbled across Monarchy’s “Dance Like Hell”. I can see how some would find it repetitive or annoying but I find it’s a great song to start dancing too. It has an alive feeling and the dance beats really help you start moving. It’s a great song to lose yourself to. Prince Rama – Bahia Prince Rama has managed to bring '80s exercise music to the 21st century. It’s a song of great spirits and I find Prince Rama can always bring me in a good mood. “Bahia” is a great energetic song that keeps me on high energy all day. Not to mention how awesome the music video for this is. Angel Olsen – Intern Angel Olsen, wow. Why haven’t I discovered her music sooner? Intern is a single off of her awaited new album MY WOMAN dropping September 2nd. Ironically, it’s angelic and Angel’s voice is sweeter than honey. I've fallen in love with her music and her voice but I’m just getting into her genius and I can’t wait to see what she has for us come September. Still Corners – The Trip I’m not sure why, but this song reminds me of dawn. Just when then sun peaks it’s head out, waking every soul from every the corner of the Earth to know it’s time to shine. It’s a chill and groovy song that’ll keep you and your Corona cool all summer long. It’s the perfect song to melt into summer. Magic City Hippies – Fanfare I was shown this by my musically inclined friendMichael and this song is completely and utterly amazing. The musical beats behind the beautifully rapped words, makes me feel like I'm in Miami. It’s a great tune to sip and chill out to on the porch. With it's light nature, it’s the song that gets me through rush hour on the way home from work. Radiohead – Decks Dark I cannot get enough of “A Moon Shaped Pool”. This song has been by my side at every negative turn, turning any situation into a positive one. Radiohead’s new album certainly has had it’s hold over me this month but this song is so hauntingly beautiful it’s hard not to always have it on. It somewhat reminds me of what 2016 Edward Scissorhands would listen to. It’s the perfect antidote to your raining day in summer. Courtney Barnett – New Speedway Boogie Courtney’s cover of The Grateful Dead’s legendary “New Speedway Boogie”. Courtney is really good at putting her own spin on things and this cover might be better than the original. It’s southern, blues-y and quite catching. There are so many great covers for The Day of the Dead, but this is by far my favorite. Car Seat Headrest – Vincent Michael showed me this song for he has gotten really into Car Seat Headrest’s latest album, Teens of Denial which recently came out this May. I have to say “Vincent” is the best rock jams out this year. This nearly 8 minute beauty has a terrific journey. Can’t wait to see them at Pitchfork this year! Honorable Mention: MGMT – Alien Days Dear Reader, This month's picks are surrounded by the need for high energy. I've found that the music I've listened to has really given me the energy and movement I needed for June. They all have the electric element to keep you going for days. Summer has a lot of zest, so to keep me going, I've chosen the top picks that keep my spirit alive. I hope it helps you through this hot summer too!
