Justice – Safe and Sound Finally, Justice is back! I believe this might be my favorite pick of September. “Safe and Sound” marks Justice’s 5 year return. From the epic bass line, to the catchy chorus – to that smoky disco groove; Justice is really back and packing. “Safe and Sound” and “Randy”, makes their upcoming 3rd studio album,Woman, seem extremely promising. Woman is out November 18th. Talking Heads – First Week/Last Week…Carefree I’ve had Talking Heads 1977 in my pocket for about two months; I’ve completely immersed myself in the album and it’s truly one of a kind. “First Week/Last Week….Carefree” really lives up to its name. All different types and styles of music are woven into this amazingly crafted alternative/indie song. Angel Olsen – Sister Angel Olsen’s MY WOMAN came out early this month and “Sister” is a stroke of genius. Eight minutes of well crafted, dreamy and beautiful soft rock and roll will keep you wanting more. Olsen assures us that she isn’t going to follow any rules but her own. “Sister” is a fantastic song to wrap yourself around. Alice Cooper – I’m Eighteen I’m well over eighteen but for some reason, Alice Cooper’s “I’m Eighteen” has caught my attention at 23. That beginning signature guitar riff guides us to that monstrous chorus, which has us yell out “I’m eighteen and I like it!”. Cooper’s 1971 classic makes us feel that surge of nostalgic emotions, angst and freedom, no matter what age. The Doors – Hyacinth House “Hyacinth House” is off ofL.A Woman, the last studio album with Jim Morrison. “I’ll say it again/I need a brand new friend/the end.” This song is, in some respects, a reflection of Morrison’s depression and desperation of separating himself from the rock star lifestyle. Paul McCartney & Wings – Jet Dispute the huge success and following of Paul McCartney and Wings, a lot of critics have criticized them and Paul, himself, agrees; "McCartney said: "We were terrible. We weren't a good group.”" I can’t exactly agree with this because I love Wings! I agree Wings was somewhat experimental and it was a way for McCartney to decompress from The Beatles break up but I find that “Jet” is pop-y and very catching. There’s speculation of what this song is actually about; Paul’s black lab? His pony? Suffragettes? Regardless, it’s a lot fun. Leonard Cohen – You Want It Darker Kicking ass at 82 years old,Leonard Cohen gave us a present on his birthday. “You Want It Darker” promises us a new album from the songwriting veteran. Cohen’s voice is so utterly perfect for this dark subject matter is hard NOT to want more. Eerie and hauntingly beautiful, Cohen’s new album is out October 21st and I’m counting down the days. STRFKR – Open Your Eyes A family favorite has finally returned! “Never Ever” teased a new album was in the works, but that was back in February! “Open Your Eyes” put new album rumors to rest when STRFKR announced Being No One, Going Nowhere, their fifth studio album, will be out November 4th! At first, I didn’t entirely like “Open Your Eyes” but much like “Never Ever”, it has completely won me over. Beach House – Wildflower A recent grab from my brother’s synth pop playlist. I’m kicking myself for ever feeling negatively towards Beach House’s Depression Cherry because it’s produced some of my most recent favorite tunes. “Wildflower” is pop-y compared to the rest of Depression Cherry. The dreamy sound of “Wildflower” is absolutely wonderful to get lost in. James Pants – We’re Through Another stolen song from my brother’s fabulous synth pop playlist on Spotify. I enjoy the story and the bob of the sound. It’s a modern track about relationships which I find refreshing. It’s obscure, I will say that, but James Pants is tremendously creative. HONORABLE MENTION Roy Orbison – Only The Lonely Dear Reader, September marks the change in seasons. The weather is turning and I’m so ready for what’s to come this fall. My picks this month really reflect on listening to oldies, embracing the amazing new works from my favorites and tuning into some really upbeat and creative songs.
