Soft Powers – Just Like Tropica-L My brother has a monster synth pop playlist on Spotify and this song is a hidden gem. The guitars makes this song truly magical. This 6 year old track from Soft Powers is the perfect tune to wind down with. The sound takes you to a different place and it’s able to ease your mind instantly. Beach House – Lover of Mine Another amazing find in the synth pop playlist. Off of their third studio album, Teen Dream, I've finally experienced this incredibly dreamy tune, six years after it's release. Whoops! But this song can lift any spirit., if you’re having a bad day or just need a little pick-me-up, Beach House is the perfect fix. This song has been on every playlist I’ve made this month because I cannot be without Beach House. Radiohead – You and Whose Army? 4 out of the 10 songs on this month’s playlist are from the Peaky Blinders season 3 soundtrack. I’ve come to the conclusion that season 3 had one of the best soundtracks, period. “You and Whose Army” was featured in the season premiere and it's stuck with me since. It’s hauntingly beautiful, much like a lot of Radiohead songs are. The entrance of the drums and piano make you feel invincible. This song stays with you even after the 100th listen. The Kills – Monkey 23 Song number 2 from the Peaky soundtrack. The Kills are incredible and I would never have guessed that this is a Kills' song. Off of their first album, Keep on Your Mean Side, 2003. It’s paced, lethargic and bluesy sound envelops itself around my heart every time. Arctic Monkeys – Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair Song number 3 from the Peaky soundtrack. I was immediately blown away by this track by Arctic Monkeys. From the calculated start to its incredible blast off; this song makes you feel like kicking a door or teeth in much like the Shelby boys do. It’s powerful overall and it makes you feel like taking on the world. Neon Indian – Annie Last month I was lucky enough to seeNeon Indian at Pitchfork Music Festival. “Annie” is off of Neon Indian’s latest album, Vega Intl. Night School, and it’s tremendously fun and it just reminds me of Alan Palomo’s amazing dance moves. Ray Charles – What’d I Say Part 1 & 2 I am currently working on a project that takes place in the 1950s. I tried to exert myself into the era and I started with the era's iconic music. For some reason “What’d I Say” just seemed to fit my direction and I’ve been absolutely floored by the unbelievable craftsmanship on this piece. Crystal Castles – Fleece Amnesty (I) came out this month, the new album from Crystal Castles minus their former leader, Alice Glass. Theirfallout is just as rough as this new album’s sound and I really mean that as a compliment. It’s grittier, it’s heavier, harder, more emotional and I love it. Fleece is a trip through anger, but so is a lot of Crystal Castles. “Fleece” is like a hurricane. You can hear the storm and calmness in the eye, which is a reoccurring theme in this new album. Archie Bronson Outfit – Cherry Lips Song number 4 from the Peaky Blinders soundtrack. A perfect fit into the show’s rockabilly attitude. The song has an incredible building element. "Cherry Lips" has a great, infectious and well-crafted rock and roll sound. Roy Orbison – Ride Away My favorite Roy Orbison song. However this song is not new to me much like the other picks. "Ride Away" is on August’s playlist because it seemed to pop up everywhere! And with that kind of frequency, I’ve been listening to it more in this closing summer season. There is Only One Roy Orbison is a treasure and “Ride Away” kicks off the album perfectly. HONORABLE MENTION: Savages – TIWYG Dear Reader, In this summer’s end, I’ve found the picks this month have been a tremendous part of my every day. I started a new creative project that I hope to have out by springtime. Music has played a huge part throughout this project's progress. But I’m absolutely ready to change seasons! Fall will bring the best out of me and hopefully, out of you too! Mr. Gnome – House Of Circles I’m not sure how else to describe this without mentioning its true power of drums. Its meticulous beats help move “House of Circles” into, well, a perfect circle. A dream sequence of a song, it’s mellow and hard when it needs to be. Sort of out of my general genre of music, but I deeply enjoy this musical ride Mr. Gnome has created. Angel Olsen – Shut Up Kiss Me I can’t help but continue to fall into Angel Olsen’s spell. “Shut Up Kiss Me” has been with me everywhere since the minute I heard it. It’s the hopeless romantic within me that connects to this song greatly. I’m infatuated with her overall sound and on this track, the drums echo behind her passionate vocals perfectly.I’m obsessed with this song and September 2nd cannot get here fast enough. Interpol – Untitled You caught me, I was rewatching/binging Friends again, and Interpol’s “Untitled” made its appearance during an emotional scene and it's presence was so powerful that it's stuck with me since. It’s as peaceful as rock and roll can get and I’ve had it on every playlist this month. Simple lyrics with a dramatic sense of sound. Holy Ghost! – Do It Again The last day of Pitchfork Music Festival allowed me to see Holy Ghost! before my ultimately seeing the artist I was there for that day, Neon Indian. I might be so bold to say that Holy Ghost! might’ve won artist of the day on that Sunday. The electronic build and their groovy beats helped us forget the tremendous heat and the energy of the crowd was beyond compare. Wings – Let ‘Em In July has been very busy for me, so finding music that I really connect to was a little difficult. But Paul McCartney & Wings’ “Let 'Em In” was not a difficult song to attach myself to. It oddly followed me all throughout this month and when I caved into its charm, I have found myself listening to it every day since. The marching, the whistling, the horns, this song has consumed me – what can I say? The lyrics are extremely intriguing. Crystal Castles – Concrete Finally! Crystal Castles has announced the release date of their latest album, Amnesty I, August 19th. It’s the first album since the departure of Alice Glass, but I feel that their momentum is stronger than ever. “Concrete” is 3 minutes of industrial noise that must be experienced live. Crystal Castles is one of the groups that even throughout the years, they can still make you move and make you crave more of their genius with every listen. Beach House – Days of Candy In all of my years of listening to Beach House, I finally had the opportunity to experience their music live at Pitchfork Music Festival this year. I must say, it wasn’t anything like I expected – it was much more. Beach House ended their timeless set with “Days of Candy”. A slow build off of Depression Cherry that I had not known before, but my festival companion, my brother, had us stay to listen to this beauty and I’m glad we did. I find this song so serene, just listening to it is pure meditation. Frank Zappa – Peaches En Regalia Again, what the hell is wrong with me? Why haven’t I heard Frank Zappa until now? This instrumental track is stunning. This jazz/rock fusion starts strong and it doesn’t ever lose its strong force. A strange twist on its genre but its genius and quite exciting! I’m just starting my Zappa journey, if you have any suggestions as to where I should start, please, let me know! Cosmetics – Sleepwalking True to the synth pop format, Cosmetics has really entered us into the age of disco…in 2016. "Sleepwalking" is a wonderful song to add to any party playlist or a song to listen to while getting ready for said disco. You can hear the glitter and reflection off of the mirror ball. It’s stylish and very infectious. Talking Heads – Pulled Up My dad showed me this song and I’m ashamed that I haven’t listened to Talking Heads’ “Pulled Up” sooner! In the classic Talking Heads fashion, its rhythmic guitar followed by David Byrne’s almost teenage-like cracking voice makes this song feel like home. It’s a delightful song and it helps makes sense as to why Talking Heads 77 is one of the greatest albums of all time. HONORABLE MENTION: Regina Spektor – Bleeding Heart Dear Reader, July was non-stop for me, I had little time to stop and smell the roses, but that didn’t necessarily mean I didn’t have time to connect and/or reflect with brilliant music. With the commotion of work, music festivals and a stunning trip to the Stanley Hotel in Colorado, I found that the picks this month has shaped me emotionally and had given me the drive to work through the busy month. August should be calmer but with a new puppy, I can’t imagine my life slowing down anytime soon!
